INSIDE THE NEWEL BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN KOLONAKI, ATHENS: LIGHTING BY IDEOLI
George Stroumboulis visits The Newel in Kolonaki, where Ideoli helped bring the boutique hotel's vision to life through lighting design, specification, procurement, and distribution.
In the heart of Kolonaki, one of Athens' most distinctive neighborhoods, The Newel represents the kind of boutique hospitality project where every detail contributes to the guest experience. From the architecture and interiors to the finishes, furnishings, and lighting, the property was designed to create an environment with its own personality and sense of place.
In this video, George Stroumboulis, CEO and Co-Founder of Ideoli Group, visits the completed property in Athens to showcase the hotel and the lighting solutions that became part of its overall design.
For Ideoli, the project went well beyond supplying lighting fixtures. Our team was involved across the lighting process, including lighting design, lighting specification, procurement, and distribution, working closely with ownership, the general manager, and the broader project team to help execute the vision for the property.
LIGHTING A BOUTIQUE HOTEL IS ABOUT CREATING AN EXPERIENCE
Boutique hospitality requires a different approach to lighting. Guests should rarely walk into a space and think about an individual fixture. Instead, they should feel the environment that the lighting helps create.
The right lighting can make a lobby feel inviting, give a guest room a sense of warmth, highlight architectural details, enhance materials and finishes, and help establish different moods throughout the day and evening. Every space has a purpose, and the lighting needs to complement that purpose without competing with the design around it.
At The Newel, that meant approaching lighting as an integral part of the overall hospitality experience.
Ideoli worked across the project to help ensure the lighting selections supported the property's design intent while also addressing the practical realities of procurement, manufacturing, coordination, delivery, and installation. That combination of design thinking and execution is especially important in hospitality projects, where hundreds of individual decisions ultimately need to come together as one cohesive environment.
FROM DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION TO PROCUREMENT AND DELIVERY
One of Ideoli's core strengths is the ability to manage multiple stages of the lighting process under one roof.
Rather than separating design, specification, sourcing, and procurement into disconnected pieces, we work with project stakeholders to create a more coordinated process. For The Newel, our scope included identifying and specifying appropriate lighting solutions, coordinating procurement, and managing distribution to help bring those selections from concept to completed installation.
Working directly with ownership and hotel management also provided an important perspective. A successful hotel has to accomplish more than looking beautiful in photographs. The spaces need to perform every day for guests and staff while maintaining the atmosphere envisioned by the designers and owners.
That is where collaboration becomes essential.
GLOBAL EXPERIENCE, LOCAL RELATIONSHIPS
Projects like The Newel also represent something personally meaningful to me.
As a Greek entrepreneur who has spent much of my career building businesses internationally, there is something special about walking through a completed project in Athens and seeing our work become part of the city's evolving hospitality landscape.
Ideoli works on projects across more than 30 countries, but our philosophy remains consistent wherever we operate: understand the people behind the project, understand what they are trying to create, and then find the right solution to help them execute it.
The relationships are just as important as the products.
Working alongside the ownership and management team at The Newel reinforced that philosophy. Great projects happen when people communicate openly, solve problems together, and remain focused on the experience they ultimately want to create for the customer.
The best hospitality lighting doesn't need to demand attention. It should complement the architecture, enhance the interiors, and help guests experience a space exactly as it was intended.
That's what makes seeing a finished project particularly rewarding.
Standing inside The Newel in Kolonaki isn't simply an opportunity to look at fixtures Ideoli helped specify and deliver. It's an opportunity to see how lighting, architecture, hospitality, and thoughtful design come together in a completed environment.
For Ideoli, that's ultimately what our work is about.
We don't simply supply lighting. We work with owners, developers, designers, architects, contractors, and operators to understand what they are trying to accomplish and help turn that vision into a finished space.
From lighting design and specification through procurement and global distribution, The Newel is another example of what can happen when strong design is paired with strong collaboration and execution.
And seeing that work illuminated in the heart of Athens makes this project even more special.
“The best hospitality lighting isn’t something you simply see. It’s something you experience. It should complement the architecture, elevate the design, and help create the feeling guests remember long after they leave.”
